The Vanier CGS Program aims to bring together all world-class doctoral students who show great leadership skills and who are already a scholar in their field. This scholarship directs towards establishing Canada as a Global center of excellence in research and higher learning. The scholars can be experts in fields like social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering and health.
About the scholarship
The scholars are awarded with $50000 each year or three years. Since the scholarship was initiated, around 835 scholarships have been awarded till date. Around 229 of them are International students from US, Europe, Africa and Asia. The program awards scholarships to around 500 students every year.
The Vanier CGS Program encourages students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their UG or PG Degree. The Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and other foreign countries are also eligible for this scholarship. The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are as follows
- The candidate must be nominated by only one Canadian University which is in the Vanier CGS allocation.
- The candidate must be seeking financial to pursue their first doctoral degree. Only PhD is eligible for funding.
- The candidate intends to pursue full-time doctoral course in the summer semester following the announcement of the results.
- The candidate must have completed around 20 months of doctoral studies.
- The candidate should have achieved a first-class average in the University where the degree is received.
The program calculates two months of part-time study as one month of full-time study. All interruptions in the study program like part-time, delays and others should be mentioned in the application form in special situations column. The candidate is expected to remain enrolled in the program and show proper n satisfactory progress in the program for the scholarship to remain active. The candidate is allowed to submit only one application.
Review and selection
The Vanier CGS is awarded to a candidate after a strong review process. First the candidate must be approved by the Canadian University that is allocated in the Vanier CGS. Then the application is forwarded to the selection committees. Each committee recommends top 55 of the applications they are given. Next, the applications selected are forwarded to the Vanier-Banting Steering committee. This committee has the top officials who select the final applications. This committee selects around 170 applications every year. This committee goes through the program, its policies and makes sure the selection I suitable to achieve the objectives finally. The Vanier Scholars are notified of their selection and are expected to take up the course and the scholarship on the same day. No delay will be encouraged by the committee.
