National Standard Examinations – National Olympiad Programme

Since many years, the necessity for a nationwide Olympiad programme in basic sciences has been acknowledged by the Indian scientific society. Indians began taking part in the International Mathematics Olympiad since the year 1989. Later, participation in International Olympiads in Chemistry, Physics, Biology as well as Astronomy was a natural outcome.
The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education and the Indian Association of Physics Teachers in collaboration initiated the Physics Olympiad programme in the year 1997-98. The next year initiatives were taken to introduce Chemistry and Biology Olympiad programmes. In the year 1998 the first batch of Indians took part in the International Physics Olympiad, followed by the first batch in the International Chemistry Olympiad the next year and in the International Biology Olympiad the following year. The year 2004 saw the first batch of Indians taking part in the International Junior Science Olympiad and in 2007 the first batch attended the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

India has hosted many International Olympiads.

  • 2001 – 33rd International Chemistry Olympiad
  • 2006 – 11th International Astronomy Olympiad
  • 2008 – 19th International Biology Olympiad
  • 2013 – International Junior Science Olympiad

These Olympiads were conducted by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, and have proved to be a great motivator for National Olympiads in India.

The National Olympiads are monetarily backed by the Board of Research in Nuclear Science, a department of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The National Olympiad is a five phase procedure. The first phase is organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers, and the following phases are organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.
National Standard Examinations

TheNational Standard Examinations comprise the initial phase of the National Olympiad Programme. All the students wishing to take part in the Olympiads will have to register for these examinations.

Eligibility for the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology streams:

  • Students who are Indian citizens, studying in Class XII can sit for these examinations.
  • Students who qualify in these exams can proceed to the other phases and ultimately participate in the International Olympiads for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Eligibility for NSEJS:

  • Students who are Indian citizens, studying in Class X can sit for these examinations.
  • Students who qualify in these exams can proceed to the other phases and ultimately participate in the International Junior Science Olympiad.

Eligibility for Astronomy stream:

  • Students who are Indian citizens, studying in Class XII can sit for these examinations.
  • Students who qualify in these exams can proceed to the other phases and ultimately participate in the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
