Why Asians Students are flocking to American universities? Is this good or bad for American Education.

Students from Asia have always flocked abroad in large numbers to pursue further studies from top institutes. The top choice of country has been US for Asian students since many decades now. The reasons behind this are the presence of top universities, easy visa process, many scholarships available, and the presence of a strong Asian community in US. Plus the fact that it is easier to get a job in US after finishing the studies than in Asia makes it even more attractive destination.

Reasons why US is a favorite destination for Asian students

Top ranking universities – Around 60% of the world’s top ranking universities are in the US. Because of this the standard of American education is considered to be very high. You would be surprised to know that the assets of Harvard University alone are more than the total higher education budget of India. This just goes on that the American universities take education very seriously and even the state universities are well equipped than most private universities of the world.

Easy availability of jobs – Students from Asia go to American universities to eventually get into a high paying job either in US or at their home-country, or to start their own business venture or startup. In terms on job market suitability, US is considered to be the best place in the world whether you want to work or start your own company. The main reason behind it is that the variety of jobs in US is a lot more than anywhere else in the world.

Easy Immigration opportunities – US is considered to be a melting pot where immigrants from all over the world reside. The American society allows people to fit in much more easily than other countries. Only a few of the developed nations have better visa and immigration policies than the US. The permanent residency option might be lengthy but it is still better than a lot of European countries.

Presence of strong Asian community – US is one country where most of the international students are from China and India. So it becomes very easy for Indian students to find their cliques quickly. So the whole process of settling down to the new society and people becomes very easy. Even at the college, there are students from Asia all around. Almost every city has temples and Indian stores/Chinatown. This makes US a default choice for Asian students.

Is it a positive trend or not?

In terms of purely volumes, Asia has the capacity to produce more scientists, mathematicians, engineers and other professionals simply because 60% of the world’s population resides here. On the other hand, around five percent of the world’s population lives in the US. So if the Asian students leave their countries and go for further education in US, it is a threat to the nation’s employment sector as it will be under-represented by American citizens. If US has more of immigrant employees then the education will also have to be customized according to their needs.

American president Barack Obama has already said that America must out-educate other nations if it wants to continue thriving economically. Competitiveness is ingrained in the minds of Asian youth. Usually Asians are raised with two career options: either working in factories or farms. However recent opportunities in finance, technology and energy sector are driving Asia’s economic future. And the best part is that Asians don’t take education for granted. In Asian villages, kids view education as the only way they can break the cycle and get out of the rural setting.

Counter argument

If the students from such competitive societies keep coming to the US, it is only going to increase the competitive bar for the American students. As is common knowledge, many American students don’t choose to go to college after high school. If being on top of your game was the only option to land a good job, the American students would also attend college in higher numbers. Then there would be higher chances of the college fee dropping, as the current higher education costs are very high. In that case the education being made cheaper for the general public and international students would be a very important step in making education more accessible.

Since education is meant to be for everyone, it would be the perfect scenario if all the talent of the world got the best education. Although this is just imagined scenario, the influx of international students is an ongoing process and is already changing the world in more ways that we realize.

It might take some years for this to happen, but there is a positive and negative side to the Asian students leaving their home countries to go to the US. However, looking at the present situation, they are only helping the American education diversify more.
